The oil filter cleans the oil in the engine lubrication system from tiny, hard particles that result from natural wear of engine parts, partial combustion of fuel components, and materials penetrating the oil, causing wear of friction pairs in the engine. When replacing the oil filter, remember to replace the engine oil.

How Often to Change the Oil?
The official owner’s manual says, that the oil change period for Ford Focus Mk1 and Mk2 is 15000 km (or 10000 miles) on 5W-30 synthetic oil. From the third generation, cars have a self-oil control system, that checks oil health by a number of cold starts, fuel consumption, mileage, temperature, and idle time and indicates when the driver should make service. Also, manufacturers recommend changing the oil once per year, despite the mileage.
Many mechanics recommend making maintenance more often and changing the oil on 5000 or even 3000 miles. That is partially true, read below why.
Make oil changes more often (once per 3000-5000 miles) only if:
- Your car has a turbocharged engine, that hotter.
- The car works in an extremely hot, cold, or dusty climate.
- Your car towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads.
- The car is used for short trips or in the city with traffic jams.
- Your driving style is aggressive, more like a drag racer.
If all the above is not match you, do not waste your money and time on extra oil changes.
How to Reset Oil Change Light?
The modern generation of Ford Focus informs the driver about oil health automatically, but after you change it, you must manually reset the oil due to light.
Step by step reset engine oil change due:
- Push brake and gas pedal at the same time.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Wait while the message “Service: Oil reset complete” appears on the dashboard.

Oil Filter Location:
Oil filters are divided by construction into cartridge and spin-on types. In the table above, you can get the part number and check out what type fits your engine. Frequently, petrol engines use spin-on filters, but diesel use cartridges.
Before changing the filter, prepare an oil drain pan, latex or nitrile gloves, and safety glasses to protect skin and eyes from hot oil!
Spin-on oil filters are located at the bottom of the engine oil pan. Cartridge oil filters you can find on the top right side of the engine.
